eSIM slow or keeps disconnecting? The real fix
An eSIM that’s slow, keeps disconnecting, or won’t connect after landing is most often a detouring roaming line plus local cell congestion; re-selecting the network manually, resetting the APN, or switching to a native line usually fixes it. The phone probably isn’t broken, and you haven’t necessarily run out of data. A lot of the time the line you bought simply takes the long way round. Quick checks first
No internet after landing, or the connection suddenly tanked? Don’t reinstall anything yet. Run through these in order, and most cases clear right here:
- Toggle airplane mode on for ten seconds, then off. This is the single most effective move. It forces the phone to drop the stale pre-flight network and search again.
- Pick the network manually. On iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Network Selection, turn off Automatic. On Android: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → your eSIM → turn off “Automatically select network”. Then choose a local carrier yourself (in Japan: docomo, SoftBank, or au). - Re-enable the travel eSIM line. In your eSIM settings, switch that line off and back on. It’s effectively a fresh network registration.
