USA travel eSIM: the cities are easy, the driving is not
Most guides to a US eSIM spend their time on coverage in New York and Los Angeles, which is the part nobody needs help with. A US trip breaks in the space between places, not in the places themselves. That gap is where the decisions actually are.
In the cities there is nothing to plan for
Downtown coverage in the big American cities is as good as anywhere you have been. Navigation, rideshare apps, a video call from the hotel lobby: it all works, and it barely matters which carrier your eSIM lands on. If your whole trip is one city plus a couple of day trips, read the data section and you are done.
The drive is the real question
Rent a car and the country changes shape. The US is big and the empty parts are properly empty, so towers thin out fast once you leave a metro area.
- Long interstate stretches. Deserts, mountain passes, the middle of the plains. Signal comes and goes, and navigation freezes a turn behind you.
- National parks. Entrances, visitor centres and the big campgrounds usually have something. Twenty minutes down a trail, or at the bottom of a canyon, usually nothing.
- Between small towns. Whole segments with no service, and the gas station Wi-Fi may not be open to you.
None of this depends on which eSIM you bought or how many gigabytes sit on it. Where there is no tower, 100GB connects you to nothing. Download the offline map for the whole route before you set off, and screenshot the day’s address, your booking and wherever you are meant to meet people.
Landing day is its own problem
US entry asks more questions than most Asian airports do. An officer may ask where you are staying, how long you are here and when you leave, and may want to see the booking or the return ticket. Hunting for airport Wi-Fi and waiting on a verification email while the queue moves is not a moment you want.
So install the eSIM before you fly and switch it on when you land. Then keep a second layer: booking confirmation, return flight, first night’s address, all saved to your photos. Data is the main line and screenshots are the backup.
How much data a US trip actually uses
Around 1GB a day covers most road-trip travellers: navigation running all day, looking up food and fuel, sending a few photos, catching up on messages back at the hotel. Navigation itself is cheap, because maps arrive in small tiles and the phone keeps the roads you have already driven.
What pushes the number up is the car turning into an entertainment system, and the hotspot. Four people tethered to your phone for a six-hour drive is a different order of usage from one person navigating. To size your own days behaviour by behaviour, how much data do you need has the table. Set photo backup to Wi-Fi only before you leave, because a US road trip produces a lot of photos.
A day on the road, start to finish
Say you check out of a city hotel and drive three or four hours to a national park (illustrative; your route and local coverage decide the details).
The morning is unremarkable. You book a ride to the rental counter, pull up the reservation, and the map flows. The first hour of highway is fine too, since the towns come often. Then the road empties out and the bars start dropping. The blue dot lags, the voice prompt arrives a turn late, and at some point the phone is not waiting for the network so much as sitting in a place that has none.
Inside the park it is sharper. The lot and the visitor centre usually connect. Walk twenty minutes down a trail and you have nothing until you walk back. Looking up the return route or sending one photo home both have to wait.
The people this never derails did their preparation on the hotel Wi-Fi that morning: offline map downloaded, address saved, route checked once. That day uses very little data. What decides how it feels is the preparation.
Why a US eSIM costs more than a Japanese one
Worth saying plainly. soda’s US prices sit a tier above our Japan and Korea prices, and the reason is upstream: for the same amount of data, a US line costs us clearly more to buy than the Japanese and Korean ones. That is the wholesale market, not a markup we invented for American travel.

What “the exit is local” means
Plenty of cheap travel eSIMs are roaming lines. You are standing in Arizona, but your traffic is carried back to a hub in Hong Kong or Singapore before it reaches the wider internet. That detour adds waiting, and it shows up most in the things that go back and forth constantly: a map redrawing, a payment clearing, a video call.

How soda works in the US
No plan to choose and no guessing how many gigabytes ten days needs. Land, open it, get billed on what you actually used. One limit, stated clearly: the US line covers the United States only. If your drive crosses into Canada or Mexico, we sell no line for either country today, so plan that leg another way.
