eSIM not working: QR won't scan, no service, no signal after landing

When an eSIM won’t install, you don’t need a tutorial. You need to know what to press right now.

This picks up where how to install an eSIM leaves off. That one covers the normal path. This one covers where the path breaks and how to push through it. The order below is what fixes things fastest in practice, not a tidy taxonomy. An eSIM that installed fine and then went slow is a different problem, and it isn’t this article.

Before anything else, check you have a connection

Installing an eSIM means reaching a server and downloading a profile. With no connection it cannot happen, and the screen rarely says so. You get a spinner or an error that explains nothing.

Do this: get on Wi-Fi and try again. No Wi-Fi around, borrow a travelling companion’s hotspot for thirty seconds. Once the profile is on the phone, the card carries its own data.

The QR code won’t scan, or the install button does nothing

Do this: switch to manual entry.

The email or the install page carries two strings, an SM-DP+ server address and an activation code. On iPhone, choose “Enter Details Manually” on the add-eSIM screen. On Android, choose to enter the activation code manually. Type both in. The result is identical to scanning.

There is a trap people hit constantly. You opened the email on the same phone you’re trying to scan with, so the QR code is sitting on the very screen the camera would have to point at, and there is no second device in the room. Manual entry is the only way through that one. Compressed images, privacy screen protectors and low brightness also stop the camera reading the code, and none of those is worth diagnosing one by one. Typing is faster.

In the soda app, when one-tap install does nothing, “other ways to install” holds the QR code and those same two strings. One-tap never needed a second screen in the first place.

”Unable to add cellular plan” or “activation code no longer valid”

Do this: go back to the install page and use the newest button on it.

The message means that activation code has been spent. eSIM QR codes are almost always single-use, and the profile downloaded the first time it was scanned. Anyone who has had a card reissued, or switched countries mid-trip, will also see this, because the old code is voided at the same moment. With soda, reinstalling does not charge you again.

Don’t go digging through the old email. That picture stopped working a while ago.

It installed, but shows No Service or Emergency Calls Only

Do this: open Settings, then Cellular, switch this eSIM on, and turn on data roaming for it.

No Service usually means the line is switched off in the system, or it is on but not permitted to roam. Travel eSIMs almost all need data roaming enabled, and the charges follow the plan you bought rather than your home carrier’s roaming rates.

If you have just landed, give it another minute or two. The phone has to find a network willing to take the card, which is not instant.

There is also a version of this that isn’t a fault at all. The card is fine, but you are still at home. A travel eSIM only registers on a network inside the countries it covers, so seeing No Service after you install it the night before is normal, and it will come up when you land. Do not delete and reinstall at that point, because deleting it means asking for a reissue.

You landed, and there is nothing

Do this: turn on airplane mode, count to ten, turn it off.

Phones routinely stay latched to whatever network they were on before takeoff, and this forces a fresh search. Most cases of “no data after landing” end here.

If it’s still dead, work down three settings, one at a time. First, point Cellular Data at the travel eSIM rather than the home line sitting idle beside it, which is the setting people get wrong most often. Second, confirm data roaming is on for this card specifically. Third, a small number of plans need an APN typed in by hand, which the product page will give you, followed by one more airplane mode cycle.

The phone doesn’t support eSIM

Do this: dial *#06#, wait about fifteen seconds, and look for an EID.

An EID means the phone supports eSIM. No EID means it doesn’t. This beats memorising model tables, because the same model number is sold as different hardware in different regions.

Two regional cases are worth knowing. Mainland China iPhones have almost no eSIM across the range, with only a few recent models as exceptions. Hong Kong and Macau versions are missing it on some models, and the XS, 12 mini, 13 mini and the 2020 SE are the ones that do have it. Rough brand and model coverage is in does your phone support eSIM, or put your model straight into the phone checker.

It stopped working after you changed phones

Do this: sign in on the new phone and request a reissue.

An eSIM is bound to the phone that downloaded it. It doesn’t pull out and slot into the next one the way a plastic SIM does, the copy on the old handset can’t move, and the original QR code was spent long ago.

soda’s reissue is free, you don’t buy the card again, and the balance stays on the account. Other providers handle this differently, so check before you upgrade. Can you transfer an eSIM to a new phone lays out the variations.

When to stop trying

Every section above gives you one action. If you’ve done them and it still won’t go, more restarts won’t change the answer. Three situations warrant an email straight away.

  • A reissue still won’t install.
  • The install page has no button left to press.
  • The same error text appears three times, word for word.

Write to support@soda.travel with a screenshot of the error, your phone model and your OS version. A screenshot saves three rounds of questions.

The short version

Installs fail for a handful of reasons: no connection, a spent code, the line switched off, roaming off, or a phone without eSIM hardware. Work down in that order and most people stop at the second or fourth section.

One habit is worth building. Install at home the night before on Wi-Fi, and leave data roaming off until you land. The same problem at home gives you an evening. The same problem in an arrivals hall gives you the length of the passport queue.

If it installed fine and only then went slow or started dropping, that’s a different set of causes entirely, covered in eSIM slow or keeps disconnecting.

Frequently asked questions

The QR code won't scan. What now?
Switch to manual entry. The same email or page carries an SM-DP+ server address and an activation code. Type those two strings in and you get the identical result. The QR code is only a picture of those two strings, so don't spend time on angles and brightness.
What does "unable to add cellular plan" mean?
That activation code has already been used. eSIM QR codes are almost always single-use, and a reissue or a country switch voids the old one at the same time. Go back to the install page in the app and use the newest button there. With soda that reinstall is not charged again.
It installed but says No Service. Where do I look?
Settings, then Cellular. Make sure the eSIM line is switched on and data roaming is enabled for it. Travel eSIMs almost all need roaming on, and you are billed by the plan itself. If you have just landed, give it a minute or two while the phone finds a network that will take it.
How do I know whether my phone supports eSIM at all?
Dial `*#06#` and wait about fifteen seconds. If an EID appears, the phone supports eSIM. Two regional cases to watch, mainland China iPhones have almost no eSIM across the whole range apart from a few recent models, and Hong Kong and Macau versions are missing it on some models, with the XS, 12 mini, 13 mini and the 2020 SE being the ones that do have it.
I changed phones and the eSIM stopped working.
An eSIM is tied to the phone that downloaded it and does not move with you. With soda, sign in on the new phone and request a reissue. It is free, you do not buy again, and the balance stays on the account.
When should I stop trying and contact support?
When a reissue still won't install, when the install page has no button left to press, or when the same error text appears three times word for word. Write to support@soda.travel with a screenshot of the error, your phone model and your OS version.
